Rachel Shearer: Whakapapa of Shimmers

Shearer has created installations, albums, sound works, and videos that recognize and reconcile the Māori concept of the “shimmer”—the vibrational force at the core of being—as a form of energetic cultural manifestation. Her interest in the ways energetic knowledge can be framed through action and inaction, in place and time, invites viewers to be carried by—and ultimately transformed by—encounters with her work.

Rachel Shearer

Based in Aotearoa (the Māori-language name for New Zealand), Rachel Shearer is an artist and composer who affiliates to Rongowhakaata, Te Aitanga a Māhaki iwi (extended kinship groups) and Pākehā (New Zealand European). Shearer draws upon a divergent set of culturally informed practices that speak on her porous, research-led approach to art making. Over the past three decades, her works have explored close listening of the earth and its environment.
